In 1998, oil went from $10 a barrel to peak at $145 a barrel. It is now trading at around $40-$50 per barrel.

I have been asked on many occasions, "Cheaper oil means cheaper fuel which is great for our petrol bills but is it good for my investments?"

"Complexity is your enemy. Any fool can make something complex. It is hard to make something simple." - Richard Branson

I saw this quote from Sir Richard Branson in a small local newspaper last week and it reinforced to me one of the most common misconceptions I see held by investors and advisers all the time.

As many of you know, I love to ask the following question to prompt you to think a little more about life:

"Assume we are now 12 months from today, what would have had to have happened over the last year for you to look back and say, 'wow, what an awesome year'?"

I have never met anyone who enjoyed paying their personal insurance premiums.

I have heard more times than I can count, "I pay these premiums each year and I've never had to claim!", insinuating that this is a bad thing.

Let's be totally honest with ourselves, not having to make a claim is actually a bloody good result! If you have claimed, it means you are either dead, totally disabled, have cancer, have had a heart attack or stroke, or at the least, are very, very sick.

I was asked the question the other day about whether with an up and down January, is the market headed for a correction or a continued bull market?

The Power of Asking Better Questions (< 1 min read time)

I recently had a discussion with a friend of mine, which highlighted the power of asking better questions.

She is just starting a new business venture and I asked, "So what do you want to achieve in the business over the next 12 months?"  I received a sheepish smile and, "I'm really not motivated to set goals, I'll just work really hard on what I am good at."
