The Power of Asking Better Questions (< 1 min read time)

I recently had a discussion with a friend of mine, which highlighted the power of asking better questions.

She is just starting a new business venture and I asked, "So what do you want to achieve in the business over the next 12 months?"  I received a sheepish smile and, "I'm really not motivated to set goals, I'll just work really hard on what I am good at."

Setting up a business from scratch and no goals! I'll be frank, I was a little shocked. Being a business owner, I know first hand how you need to work smarter and not harder.

So being myself and always wanting to help, I then decided to present my question from a different angle.

"If we were sitting here 12 months from today, what would have had to have happened for you to look back and say, 'wow, what an awesome year'?"

I received a thoughtful look and nothing else and I thought I had failed. Two days later I received the following email from that same friend:-

"Your goal setting rephrasing worked a treat on me! I'm now clear on what an awesome year would look like for me."

Valuable lesson for me, better questions get better results.

My question to you for the month:-

"If we were sitting here 12 months from today, what would have had to have happened for you to look back and say, 'wow, what an awesome year'?"

"People are not lazy. They simply have goals that do not inspire them." - Tony Robbins

Have a great month,
